About this explorer

What it is. A reproducible demonstrator of multi-zone conservation planning for the landscape around Cagar Alam Gunung Nyiut (Bengkayang, Landak and Sanggau regencies, West Kalimantan). The planning region is the nature reserve plus a 10 km belt of surrounding village land on the Indonesian side (). It stands in for a community-led landscape whose real village boundaries are not public.

How plans are made. The region is split into 25 ha planning units. Each unit goes to one of three zones: protection, sustainable use / agroforestry (no forest clearing) or community use (not restricted by the plan). An integer programme (the prioritizr/Marxan-with-Zones minimum-set formulation, solved with HiGHS) meets the targets for forest types, indicator species and carbon at the smallest loss of livelihood opportunity. The reserve is locked into protection.

Limitations.

How it should be used. As a starting point for conversations, not an answer. Zoning with communities needs free, prior and informed consent, participatory mapping of customary land and use, and community-defined targets. The tool makes the trade-offs visible so those choices can be discussed. It does not make them.
